Original late Victorian seamans or sea chest made by J Gieve & Sons Portsmouth, who were apart of the Gieve & Hawkes dynasty and reknown Naval outfitters of the period. A very
solid and heavy chest, made from 1 1/2" (37mm) pine with steel banded supports.
Original brassware including working lock and key, makers plate, lid restaint to the rhs, hinges and lid locating pins. It would originally have had plain rope beckets to the ends
as carrying handles, these have been replaced at some stage with steel trunk handles (2 at each end) to make it easier to carry when fully laden.
It retains its original paint finish with various dinks and scuffs to that finish commensuate with age and use. The inside of the chest has been cleaned and lightly restored to allow it to be
used for a variety of storage purpose.
Presented cleaned, lightly refurbished and waxed.
